An Overview Of Spain

Spain is a European country in the south west. It is located on the peninsula of Iberia. The mainland’s south and east is bordered by the great Mediterranean Sea. Spain however claims an overseas territory in Britain call Gibraltar. The north east and north of the mainland is bordered by Bay of Biscay, Andorra, and France. Portugal and Atlantic Ocean are on the west and northwest.

Spain’s capital is Madrid and its official national language is Spanish. There are other regional languages such as Galician, Catalan, and Basque and the currency is the European Euro owing to the fact that Spain holds membership to the European Union.

Its territory includes several islands. These include Balearic Islands, Canary Islands and Parsley Island among others. Spain is a global empire making Spanish a very popular language. It ranks second as the most spoken language.

Spain’s economy is highly developed and it holds the twelfth positions in the world’s economy basing on the nominal GDP. The living standards are very high. The country also holds memberships to WTO, OECD, NATO and the United Nations.

Being located on the peninsula of Iberia, it is highly populated by Iberians, Celts and Basques. The peninsula was once a colony of the Rome but during the middle ages it was ruled by the Germans and Moorish invaders. The Christian kingdoms however regained control. The most popular invasion of Spain is probably that of Napoleon that led to emergence of independence movements.

Spain’s tourism started early, specifically during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. Spain started attracting people who would visit over summer. Most of the tourists were from France, Scandinavia, central Europe and British isles. The head quarters of WTO are actually located in Spain’s capital of Madrid. It ranks second on the list of the countries that are most visited preceded by France.

There are other attractions to Spain. The land is highly mountainous and has plateaus and chains of mountains. This gives the land a beautiful landscape and many tourists come to Spain to see the great sceneries. These include the Pyrenees, cordillera Cantabria, montes de Toledo, sistema ibérico, sierra morena, Sistema Central among others.

There are also some major rivers in Spain that include the Ebro, Tagus, Duero, Guadalquivir and Guadiana. They are all very popular and are a major tourist attraction.

Having affiliations with many islands, Spain is not short of beaches, actually, there are very many beaches in Spain. These are the best places to relax while visiting Spain.
