History

It was the Phoenicians who founded Rota; this town has been inhabited since the Bronze Age from the evidence found in the necropolis. The Romans conquered it shortly before the Moors took over to make it a fortress town. Rota was used to defend against any attacks from the Normans.

Rota was constantly fought over by many brave warriors throughout the ages due to the strategic location at the Bay of Cadiz.

Rota Today

Rota is very peaceful today with booming tourism and fishing industries. There is a Naval Base guarding the town and its surroundings at the Bay with a big marina situated next to a fishing port. This port is active with fishermen carrying on with their livelihood activities today.

The Old Town of Rota houses an Arabian fortress called Castillo de Luna which functions as the local Tourist Information Office.

There are still many ancient church remnants around Rota with some dating back as far as 15th century or 16th century. Some sports beautiful Gothic façade and interior artwork. Tourists can enjoy the many ancient palaces and churches with a lot of interesting ancient architecture visible. The old town wall has been well conserved till this day.
